Having been to several Drupal events, I've noticed they all have a few things in common:
The content is usually excellent and educational.
The largest group there is typically developers, and they influence the content.
Because of the first 2 points, there is typically little to no project management (PM) discussion, this last con in Denver having only 1 session for instance.
For project, portfolio and operations managers, this is a bit of a let-down. At the last conference I held a BoF where the turn out, close to 40 people, was huge. We had a very good discussion on topics ranging from estimation to test planning. I wish we’d have had more content like this! The only PM session, Tips, Tricks and Techniques: Project Management Using Hybrid Agile Development, was standing room only. Obviously, there is a demand for this type of session!
The lack of PM content has inspired me to try to put something together, much like the CxO pre-drupalcon conference. I've reached out to some people organizing at Munich, but I'd like to get feedback from the Drupal community itself about who would be interested in a day of management techniques and training before the con.
Subjects I'm keen to tackle and find presenters on:
- Estimation techniques for Drupal Projects
- Risk Management for Drupal Projects
- "Watergile" and other Hybrid PM techniques for Drupal projects
- Planning and Time-tracking techniques for Drupal projects
- Portfolio mgmt and scheduling solutions
This list could go on and on, the subjects are endless.
I think there is a truth that needs to be faced: Planning for projects using Drupal is vastly different than a normal project plan. There are risks to take into account unique to this platform that we could all benefit from discussing.
If you're interested in this idea, or in presenting should we get the ball rolling -- please comment or contact me at Shannon (at) bluesparklabs (dot) com.
Thanks!
